Mention gas tank defects and most people think of the Ford Pinto, which was prone to explosions and fires in rear-end collisions. The design defect in the Pinto’s gas tank led to a recall of about 1.5 million Pintos in 1978.
GM Side Saddle Gas Tank
Problems with gas tanks and fuel systems did not end with the Pinto. According to data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), more than 1,800 people were killed in fire crashes involving GM pickup trucks equipped with a side saddle gas tank between 1973 and 2000. That’s more than 20 times the number of deaths associated with the Pinto’s gas tank defects. The side saddle design, in which the gas tank is mounted outside the vehicle’s frame, was installed in more than 10 million GM trucks between 1973 and 1991.
The Ford Crown Victoria and the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, a car frequently driven by law enforcement officers, have also had problems with gas tank fires and explosions. A defective cruise control switch that sparked fires prompted a recall of 3.6 million Fords. Fuel hoses that came loose and caused a fire hazard caused a recall of some Buick Regals.
